Rabbit-proofing your home is an important part of responsible indoor rabbit care. Rabbits are naturally curious and love to chew, explore, and investigate their surroundings. Creating a safe environment can help prevent injuries and protect household items.
Protect Electrical Cables
Electrical wires can be dangerous because rabbits may chew them. Keep cables out of reach or cover them with suitable protective barriers. Never leave exposed electrical cords where your rabbit can easily access them.
Remove Toxic Plants
Some household and garden plants can be harmful to rabbits. Keep unknown or potentially toxic plants away from areas your rabbit can explore.
Protect Furniture
Rabbits may naturally chew wooden furniture, carpets, walls, and other household materials. Provide suitable chew toys and barriers to redirect this behavior toward safer objects.
Secure Small Objects
Remove small items that your rabbit could swallow. Plastic pieces, loose decorations, and other tiny objects can create serious hazards.
Create a Safe Exercise Area
Give your rabbit a secure space for running and exploring. Check the area regularly for sharp edges, gaps, unstable furniture, or other dangers.
Keep Cleaning Products Away
Household cleaners, medicines, chemicals, and other potentially harmful substances should be stored securely and completely out of your rabbit’s reach.
Supervise Exploration
Even a rabbit-proofed room should be checked regularly because rabbits can discover new ways to reach objects. Supervised exploration is especially important when your rabbit is first introduced to a new area.
A carefully rabbit-proofed home allows your pet to explore, exercise, and play while reducing common household hazards. Combining safe housing with suitable enrichment can create a comfortable environment for an active indoor rabbit.
